The south of Croatia has always been one of the most popular holiday destinations<\/strong>. In the south, the weather is more stable, the nature is more beautiful and the sea is cleaner and deeper. From the Pelje\u0161ac peninsula and coastal towns to forested islands, each place is more beautiful than the last.<\/p>\n

We know that it can be more challenging to plan a holiday to a faraway destination<\/strong> due to the longer journey, but trust us when we say it’s absolutely worth it. We have been and can confirm this, and we have compiled all of our experiences and impressions to share with you. Read on to find out what to see, where to eat, where to go to the beach and where to stay in the Dubrovnik region.<\/p>\n

What to see<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Dubrovnik<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Even if Dubrovnik is the only place you visit during your stay in the region, it will be enough. This historic city is surrounded by nearly 2 kilometers of city walls<\/strong> built for defense purposes. Today, they are a popular attraction offering wonderful views of the city and the sea. Other sights include the City Hall, the birthplace of Marin Dr\u017ei\u0107, and the Lovrijenac Fortress. A walk along Dubrovnik’s main street, Stradun, is also a must. And if you’re lucky, you might even come across a live performance of the famous local dance, lin\u0111o<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Surroundings<\/h3>\n

Cavtat<\/strong> \u2013 Unlike neighboring Dubrovnik, which is teeming with tourists year-round, Cavtat remains a peaceful gem<\/strong> where you can swim, enjoy delicious food, or simply take a walk while inhaling the scent of pine trees. And you can do all this without too many crowds. You can reach Cavtat by car or by city bus from Dubrovnik.<\/p>\n

Island of Mljet<\/strong> \u2013 Whenever someone asks me which is my favorite Adriatic island, I always think of Mljet first. In addition to being repeatedly declared one of the most beautiful islands in the Adriatic, it is the most forested<\/strong> and largest southern Dalmatian island. The good news is that despite the large amount of forests, there are no snakes on Mljet (they are eaten by mongooses). While on the island, be sure to visit Odysseus’ Cave<\/a><\/strong> (go at noon when the sun illuminates the cave), the salt lakes (Malo and Veliko), and the islet of St. Mary. You can reach Mljet by ferry from Pelje\u0161ac or by boat from Dubrovnik.<\/p>\n

Island of Kor\u010dula<\/strong> \u2013 On Kor\u010dula, you can enjoy a walk through the old town protected by UNESCO, dinner by the sea, and swimming with a view of Pelje\u0161ac. Be sure to book an island-hopping tour<\/a>, which will give you the opportunity to visit the neighboring islands of Badija and Vrnik, as well as the nearby town of Lumbarda (it has sandy beaches). Kor\u010dula is also famous for its performances of the More\u0161ka<\/strong>, a traditional sword dance. Performances are held during the summer months; see the schedule here<\/a>. Food lovers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try local homemade pasta – makaruni<\/em>. You can reach Kor\u010dula by ferry from Pelje\u0161ac or by catamaran from Split.<\/p>\n

A can’t-miss part of any visit to Dubrovnik is climbing Mount Sr\u0111<\/strong>. The hill offers panoramic views of the entire city and the surrounding islands. There are several ways to reach the hilltop, but the most scenic route is by cable car. The cable car operates during the summer months.
