If you’re looking for an adventurous way to spend your holiday, Istria is the place for you. Apart from the coastal towns, Istria offers a number of biking and hiking trails<\/strong> that will lead you to discover its hidden gems.<\/p>\n

Istria<\/h2>\n

The Istrian Peninsula is located in north-western Croatia, between the Gulf of Venice and the Kvarner Gulf. Spanning more than 3,000 km\u00b2, most of the peninsula lies in Croatia, with only a small northern part belonging to Slovenia. Istria boasts numerous cycling and hiking trails, the most famous of which is the Parenzana.<\/p>\n

The Parenzana Trail<\/h2>\n

The Parenzana runs along the route of the former railway line from Trieste to Pore\u010d<\/strong>. At the beginning of the 20th century, the railway helped to develop poorer areas of Istria by making it easier to transport salt and agricultural products. The name ‘Parenzana’ comes from the Italian name for the town of Pore\u010d: ‘Parenzo’. It is also known as the Path of Health and Friendship.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The trail<\/h3>\n

The Parenzana Trail begins in the Italian port city of Trieste and continues towards the Italian-Slovenian border<\/strong>. After crossing the border, it passes through the Slovenian coastal towns of Koper, Izola, Portoro\u017e and Se\u010dovlje. Shortly after Se\u010dovlje, the trail crosses the Slovenian\u2013Croatian border<\/strong> and continues into the heart of the Istrian peninsula. It winds through the towns of Buje, Gro\u017enjan, Livade, Motovun, Vi\u017einada and Vi\u0161njan, eventually reaching the coastal town of Pore\u010d. You will cross two borders if you cycle the entire trail, but don’t worry \u2014 you won’t be stopped at the border because all three countries are part of the Schengen area. Nevertheless, you should still carry your ID card with you.<\/p>\n

Parenzana in numbers<\/h3>\n

The entire route is around 123 km long.<\/p>\n

Parenzana’s lowest point is in Milje and Koper (2 m altitude), and its highest point is near Gro\u017enjan (293 m). There are nine tunnels<\/strong> along the trail in total, with a combined length of 1,530 metres. Some tunnels are equipped with lighting, but others are not, so we advise you to bring a bike lamp to help you get through the tunnels safely. There are altogether 11 bridges and six viaducts<\/strong> along the trail.<\/p>\n

Some of the most interesting are in Oprtalj<\/strong> (75 m long and 25 m high) and Sabadin<\/strong> (64 m long and 20 m high). The viaducts offer scenic views of the Istrian countryside and are all secured with a fence, making them safe for use with children.<\/p>\n

How to plan <\/span>the<\/span> trail<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Which<\/span> type<\/span> of<\/span> bicycle<\/span> should<\/span> I take?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

While<\/span> the<\/span> Slovenian<\/span> section<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> trail<\/span> is<\/span> mostly<\/span> paved<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> Croatian <\/span>section<\/span> is<\/span> mostly<\/span> made<\/span> up<\/span> of<\/span> gravel<\/span> roads<\/span>, some <\/span>of<\/span> which<\/span> are <\/span>rough<\/span>. <\/span>This<\/span> is<\/span> why<\/span> we<\/span> recommend<\/span> strong<\/span> trekking<\/span> or<\/span> mountain<\/span> bikes<\/span><\/strong> with<\/span> deep<\/span>-profile <\/span>tyres<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>Road<\/span> bikes<\/span> are <\/span>not<\/span> suitable<\/span> for <\/span>the<\/span> Croatian <\/span>section<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> Parenzana<\/span> trail<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your<\/span> best<\/span> friend<\/span> on <\/span>the<\/span> Parenzana<\/span>: <\/span>your<\/span> bicycle<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Make sure your bicycle is in good <\/span>condition and<\/span> consider bringing basic spare parts and tools<\/strong> to repair it in case of failure. Although there are some service stations<\/strong> close to the route in the towns of Buje, <\/span>Gro\u017enjan<\/span>, <\/span>Livade<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>Ka\u0161telir-Labinci<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> <\/span>Brtonigla<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> <\/span>Novigrad<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> <\/span>Pore\u010d<\/span><\/span><\/a> and <\/span><\/span>Umag<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/a> none of them are directly on the trail. Therefore, if you experience a bike defect outside any of these towns, you will have to rely on yourself to get it fixed.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you are using an e-bike, there are charging stations<\/strong> in some of the towns along the route, although they are not <\/span>located<\/span> directly on the trail itself. You can find some of them at the following locations: <\/span><\/span>San Servolo Beer & Spa resort, Buje<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0 <\/span>(Giant bicycles only), <\/span><\/span>Hostel Parenzana<\/span>,<\/span> Triban<\/span><\/span><\/a> (Bosch bicycles only), in <\/span><\/span>Kanal near Motovun<\/span><\/span><\/a> (Bosch bicycles, other bicycles with adapter), <\/span><\/span>Valmar Diamant Hotel<\/span><\/span><\/a> in Pore\u010d (Bosch bicycles only) and <\/span><\/span>Tourist association Ka\u0161telir-Labinci<\/span><\/span><\/a> (Bosch bi<\/span>cycles<\/span> only). If you have come on holiday without a bike and would like to rent one, you can do so in the following towns: Buje (<\/span><\/span>Camelus d.o.o. MTBike<\/span><\/span><\/a>), <\/span>Motovun<\/span> (<\/span><\/span>Rent a bike point Motovun<\/span><\/span><\/a>), Pore\u010d (<\/span><\/span>Quick rent a bike<\/span><\/span><\/a>), <\/span><\/span>Brtonigla (Rent a bike)<\/span><\/span><\/a> and <\/span><\/span>Umag (TourISTRA Travel Agency)<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where<\/span> to <\/span>stay<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

If <\/span>you<\/span> de<\/span>cide to cycle the whole <\/span>Parenzana<\/span> trail, you will <\/span>probably need<\/span> to stop for the night somewhere along the way. There <\/span>are<\/span> plenty<\/span> luxurious<\/span><\/strong>, spacious villas<\/strong> available for you to stay in along the way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Most of these villas are located in peaceful surroundings, and many of them have outdoor swimming pools<\/strong>.<\/span> Check out the wide selection of villas in <\/span><\/span>Buje<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/span>Gro\u017enjan<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/span>Motovun<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/a> Vi\u0161njan<\/span><\/span><\/a> or <\/span><\/span>Pore\u010d<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Parenzana<\/span> with<\/span> children<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Although the <\/strong><\/span>Parenzana<\/span><\/strong> Trail<\/strong> is <\/span>generally considered<\/span> easy, you and your children will still need to be <\/span>reasonably fit<\/span>. The trail can be rough<\/strong> in places, so make sure they are used to riding on such paths. We recommend choosing just one segment of the trail. <\/span>The most interesting and scenic section is between <\/span>Gro\u017enjan<\/span> and <\/span>Livade<\/span>. This <\/span>20 km<\/span> stretch features many tunnels and long viaducts that children will particularly enjoy.\"\"<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Where<\/span> to <\/span>rest<\/span>, <\/span>eat<\/span> and<\/span> drink<\/span><\/h3>\n

There are several <\/span>rest<\/span><\/strong> stops<\/strong> along the <\/span>Parenzana<\/span> route. As most of them are <\/span>located<\/span> outside towns, it is not possible to buy food there. Make sure you bring your own snacks and drinks. If you need to fill up your water bottle, public drinking water taps<\/strong> are available in some towns<\/span> (<\/span>Gro\u017enjan<\/span>, <\/span>Livade<\/span> and <\/span>Labinci<\/span>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>f you decide to have lunch in a restaurant, you will find plenty of them in the towns that the <\/span>Parenzana<\/span> route passes through. <\/span>You can find places to eat close to the trail in most Istrian towns<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What<\/span> to <\/span>see<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The<\/span> Parenzana<\/span> trails<\/span> offers<\/span> picturesque<\/span> views<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> Istrian<\/span> countryside<\/span> while<\/span> you<\/span> ride<\/span> through<\/span> the<\/span> vineyards<\/span> and<\/span> olive<\/span> groves<\/span> and<\/span> passing<\/span> through<\/span> tunnels<\/span> and<\/span> across<\/span> the<\/span> viaducts<\/span>. <\/span>Apart<\/span> from<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> trails<\/span> also<\/span> takes<\/span> you<\/span> through<\/span> some <\/span>interesting<\/span> spots<\/span> that<\/span> are <\/span>worth<\/span> visiting<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Gro\u017enjan<\/h4>\n

Perched<\/span> on a <\/span>hill<\/span> above<\/span> the<\/span> Mirna <\/span>River<\/span>, Gro\u017enjan <\/span>is<\/span> a <\/span>medieval<\/span> town<\/span> also<\/span> known<\/span> as <\/span>the<\/span> ‘Town <\/span>of<\/span> Artists<\/span><\/strong>‘<\/strong>, <\/span>due<\/span> to <\/span>the<\/span> numerous<\/span> artists<\/span> and<\/span> musicians<\/span> who<\/span> have<\/span> settled<\/span> there<\/span>. <\/span>There<\/span> are <\/span>many<\/span> galleries<\/span> and<\/span> art <\/span>studios<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> in<\/span> summer<\/span> you<\/span> can<\/span> enjoy<\/span> one <\/span>of<\/span> the<\/span> town’s<\/span> musical<\/span> events<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Livade<\/h4>\n

The <\/span>Parenzana<\/span><\/strong> Museum<\/strong> is located in <\/span>Livade<\/span>, a village in the Mirna <\/span>river valley<\/span>. The museum <\/span>houses many<\/span> documents, <\/span>photographs<\/span> and old postcards, as well as information about the operation of the <\/span>Parenzana<\/span> Railway.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Motovun<\/h4>\n

The<\/span> historic<\/span> town<\/span> of<\/span> Motovun <\/span>is<\/span> located<\/span> close<\/span> to <\/span>the<\/span> Parenzana<\/span> trail<\/span>, on a <\/span>hill<\/span> above<\/span> the<\/span> Mirna <\/span>River<\/span>. <\/span>It<\/span> is<\/span> considered<\/span> one <\/span>of<\/span> the<\/span> most <\/span>attractive<\/span> medieval<\/span> towns<\/span> in<\/span> Istria<\/span>. <\/span>Dominating<\/span> the<\/span> view<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> town<\/span> are <\/span>its<\/span> mighty<\/span> city<\/span> walls<\/span> and<\/span> 27-metre-tall <\/span>bell<\/span> tower<\/span>. Rakotule<\/h4>\n

Rakotule<\/span> is a small rest stop <\/span>located<\/span> around 5 km before <\/span>Vi\u017einada<\/span>. Children will love it thanks to the small playground and little zoo where you can see typical Istrian farm animals.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vi\u017einada<\/h4>\n

In <\/span>Vi\u017einada<\/span>, you can see a life-size model of a locomotive<\/strong>. Such locomotives used to run on the <\/span>Parenzana<\/span> railway. <\/span>Your children will love the possibility of climbing inside the cabin of the locomotive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nova vas \u2013 <\/span>the<\/span> B<\/span>a<\/span>redine<\/span> cave<\/span><\/h4>\n

Not far from<\/span> Pore\u010d, <\/span>you’ll<\/span> find the village of Nova vas. Close to the station is the <\/span>Baredine<\/span><\/strong> Cave<\/strong>.<\/span> This karst cave is open to visitors, who can admire the underground lakes, <\/span>stalactites<\/span> and stalagmites inside. In front of the cave, there is an information board and a small restaurant.<\/span><\/p>\n

When<\/span> to <\/span>go<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

To avoid the summer heat and crowds, we recommend visiting the trail in spring or autumn.<\/span> If you do decide to visit in summer, choose the early hours to avoid the heat. It is not advisable to ride on the <\/span>Parenzana<\/span> trail in the rain, as it can become very muddy and slippery in some areas, which increases the risk of accidents.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What<\/span> to take <\/span>with<\/span> you<\/span><\/h3>\n

For safety reasons, always wear a helmet<\/strong>. Wear comfortable sports clothing that <\/span>won’t<\/span> make you feel too hot or too cold. Bring some basic tools to repair your bike in case of breakdown, as well as a bike pump and lamp. I<\/span>f you decide to start <\/span>the trail <\/span>in Trieste, be careful as there is a lot of busy traffic and the <\/span>Parenzana<\/span> route at the start might not be the best place to cycle with children.<\/span> Y<\/span>ou can choose any other point<\/span> to start the trail<\/span> and only cycle through a specific section. There are several places where you can access the trail by car \u2013 simply park close to the trail and cycle along the section you want to explore. You can park close to the <\/span><\/span>former <\/span><\/span><\/a>Buje railway station<\/span><\/span>, the <\/span><\/span>Stanica village (former railway<\/span> station<\/span>)<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the village of <\/span>Gro\u017enjan<\/span>, the village of <\/span><\/span>Kanal near Motovun<\/span><\/span><\/a> and the village of <\/span><\/span>Vi\u017einada<\/span><\/span><\/a>, among others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The best way to prepare yourself for the <\/span>trail<\/span> is to gather as much useful information as possible. You can get the <\/span><\/span>brochure and<\/span> the<\/span> map<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> containing<\/span> all the <\/span>relevant <\/span>information from several tourist offices along the <\/span>trail or<\/span> download <\/span>them<\/span> from the official <\/span><\/span>Parenzana page<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong>.<\/span> The brochure and map are available in Croatian, Slovenian, English, <\/span>Italian<\/span> and German<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>The map also provides information on where to find tourist offices, <\/strong><\/span>accommodation<\/span><\/strong> and restaurants<\/strong>, as well as more specific details on where to rent a bike, get your bike repaired<\/strong><\/span>,<\/span><\/strong> or recharge your e-bike<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
