Pools in private villas: how to choose your ideal pool villa

Pools in private villas: how to choose your ideal pool villa

When we think of our dream holiday, we each have our own ideas. Some prefer a hotel, others a resort with lots of facilities, while others enjoy camping in the countryside and sleeping under the open sky. One thing will find its way to each list – a pool.

Whether large, small, deep or shallow, we all enjoy a swim in our own pool. Holidays and pools go together like a horse and carriage. And considering pools are usually a bit of a luxury and not everyone can afford a pool at home, it’s no wonder that having a pool on holiday is often a high priority. Our offer includes many villas and holiday homes and it virtually goes without saying that they all have a pool.

That’s why we decided to ask the owners of our villas to tell us a little more about their pools. If you want to know what kind of pools are available, how they differ and what our partners do to make their pool stand out from others, keep reading. We have answered all these questions and many more on the topic of pools.

Let’s dive in…

Shapes of pools

Although rectangular pools are by far the most common, there are many different shapes of pools. These vary depending on the owner’s preference, the space available and the purpose of the pool. From oval-shaped, round, shorter and narrower, wider and longer to pools with an unusual shape, everything is allowed. If the pool is intended for pleasure and its function is primarily aesthetic, the shape can vary greatly. If it is intended for swimming, a slightly narrower but longer shape is the best choice.

Size of the pool

Just like with the shape, there are also many variations in terms of size. Again, it all depends on the owner’s preferences and the available space. The standard pool size is 8×4 metres, or 32 m2 – our offer includes smaller and more intimate pools, but also more spacious pools with an area of up to 60 m2. You can enjoy a swim here and get in shape just in time for the upcoming Paris Olympics. And there’s plenty of room for the giant inflatable mattress. Don’t forget your air pump!

Water filtration in pools

Let’s start by saying that the process of filtration and disinfection of pool water is quite complicated. We will thus not go into the details. Instead, we will cover the main types of filtration and water treatment and explain how they work. What is filtration and why is it needed? When you swim in a pool, dirt and particles of various sizes accumulate over time. From those that you can see with the naked eye (leaves, sand, etc.) to those that are not visible to the naked eye. These are micro-particles that the filter may not be able to catch and the water requires additional treatment. More on this in the next chapter.

Filter systems using sand

When it comes to filter systems, there are two main types. On the one hand, we have filter systems with sand – the main task of the filter is to trap dirt and particles from the water. The water is fed into the filter with the help of a pump and passes through different layers of sand in the filter. Dirt remains on the surface or in the layers of sand. In this case, the sand acts as a natural filter. After the water flows through the filter, the cleaned water returns to the pool. Over time, a lot of dirt collects in the filter, which therefore needs to be washed and emptied regularly.

Filter systems using cartridges

Filters with cartridges work by means of mechanical filtration. Instead of passing through sand, the water is passed through a cartridge in the filter and the fine fibres inside the cartridge (synthetic fibres) catch dirt and can trap even the smallest particles. After filtration, the purified water flows back into the pool. These filters are very popular because of their filtration capabilities. One disadvantage is that the filters have to be cleaned and replaced regularly.

Pool water treatment

After the pool water has been filtered, your pool will look clean and everyone will want to swim in it. However, remember that you will probably not catch all micro-organisms and these love water and high temperatures. In order to eliminate all of the harmful micro-organisms, the water must also be treated. There are several ways to do this.

Electrolysis

One of the methods of water treatment is the process of electrolysis. An electrolysis device produces chlorine from the salt in the pool water or in a special container and the chlorine produced is stored in a tank located next to the device itself. When it comes to water treatment methods, this has become very popular in recent years.

The technology for producing chlorine has advanced and electrolysis can now be controlled much more precisely. Modern devices can now measure the salt level in the water very precisely and make it possible to regulate the chlorine level or the pH value. If we add the possibility of connecting to a smartphone, it is no wonder that this method is very popular with villa owners.

Treatment with chlorine

This is one of the common methods for disinfecting pool water and is used to eliminate algae, bacteria and viruses. The chlorine is added to the water directly in liquid form (sodium hypochlorite) or in the form of capsules. Following a chemical reaction that occurs in contact with water, the resulting formula can disinfect the water and eliminate microorganisms. It is important to check the chlorine level on a regular basis, as it must not exceed certain limits. This method is extremely effective for pool hygiene, but it requires regular monitoring to ensure the safety of pool users.

Special pool types

Now that we have learnt more about the filtration and disinfection of pool water, we can move on to more exciting topics. A pool in itself provides plenty of fun, especially for children, but there are numerous additional amenities and extra features that make a pool much more attractive. We will be mentioning some of the most popular and common ones in our villas.

Heated pools

Not a fan of the cold and the thought of cold water gives you goose bumps? Yeah, we know the feeling. In this case, you will certainly pay closer attention to heated pools. They are very practical, especially in cold weather. Although special pumps are used to heat pools, which drive up the cost of the investment, they are also becoming increasingly common in private pools.

They extend the swimming season and are very popular, especially in the early and late season when the outside temperatures are not exactly high. For a detailed search, use the filter option “Heated pools” after selecting your destination – you will then only see villas with a heated pool in the search results. There’s no need to be freezing.🥶

Infinity pools

Infinity pools are a special type of pool that create the optical illusion that the pool water is flowing over the edge. This creates the illusion that the water merges with the horizon or background. Because of this effect, infinity pools are very popular in places with impressive views, e.g. of mountains or the sea. Not only can you swim here, but you can also enjoy a unique view and your friends will certainly envy you for your photos.

Pools with hydromassage

You’ve had a busy day, perhaps you’ve visited the many sights that our villas in Croatia or Italy have to offer and all you need now is a massage? If you have chosen the right villa, you don’t need to worry: you can simply jump into the pool and get a massage. A whirlpool is equipped with special jets that pressurise the water, creating a strong current that massages the body. Depending on your position in the pool, different parts of the body such as the back, legs, neck or feet can be massaged.

A hydromassage has numerous therapeutic benefits, such as reducing muscle tension, relieving stress, improving circulation and relieving pain.

Pools with extra facilities

Whether you prefer a pool with a waterfall, slides or a counter-current system, our offer is really large and everyone will find something to their liking. Holiday homes with a pool are a very popular choice for a family holiday. Due to their size and the amount of space they offer, they are ideal for two or even three families on holiday together. If you share the costs, you will see that a holiday home can be well worth it compared to a hotel.

The biggest advantage, however, is the privacy and the private pool. No need to get up early to grab sunloungers. You don’t have to worry about whether there’s enough space in the pool for everyone. And if you find a villa with a pool equipped with special attractions, your children can have fun in the water all day long. And at the end of the day, they will fall asleep with a smile on their faces.

Code of conduct for pools

Finally, here are a few rules you should follow so that you can enjoy your holiday safely and carefree and keep your pool clean and tidy. The owner will be grateful and you will also ensure a better holiday.

1. Be sure to shower before entering the pool

Before you enter the pool, you should definitely take a quick shower. In most of our villas, the shower is right next to the pool. This prevents dirt and cosmetic products from ending up in the pool. This keeps the water cleaner and prevents bacteria from developing.

2. Do not use too much sun cream

Too much sun cream can contamite the pool.

Although sun protection is important, you should not use too much. Too much sunscreen can form a film on the surface of the water, which contributes to the build-up of dirt and can also clog the pool filter and impair its function.

3. Remind your children to go to the toilet before entering the pool

We all know how much fun it is to pee in the pool and children love it. However, remember that chlorine combined with ammonia causes a chemical reaction that can result in bad smells. Therefore, ask the little ones to go to the toilet before you let them into the pool.

4. Do not eat in the pool and be careful with alcohol

Eating in the pool can attract insects and increases the risk of the pool becoming dirty and the filter clogging. Be extra careful if you drink alcohol. Alcohol and swimming are not a good combination, don’t go overboard.

5. Ask owners if pets are allowed to swim

If you have pets, do not allow them to swim in the pool. Dogs will leave hair in the pool water, which can clog the filter. It is essential to check with the owner beforehand whether pets are allowed to swim in the pool.

6. Keep an eye on your children at all times

If you have children, especially children who cannot yet swim, keep an eye on them at all times. A moment of distraction can lead to an accident. So be extra careful and enjoy a carefree holiday.

7. No jumping and fooling around in the pool

Jumping into the pool is great fun, but can also be dangerous. The tiles around the pool can be very slippery, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries. Be careful and don’t be over-confident when swimming in the pool.
