How to get there
The island of Krk is connected to the mainland by bridge. The bridge makes it one of the most accessible, and therefore one of the most visited Croatian islands. However, its popularity and proximity to the central European countries (especially Slovenia) also have drawbacks. The beaches as well as the roads get very crowded during the summer months.
So, if you’d like to avoid getting stuck in traffic, here’s what we recommend:
- Visit Krk in the pre- or post-season
- In peak season, avoid traveling on weekends and during rush hours.
What to do
Sightseeing
When you’ve had your fill of sports or leisure, it’s time to discover the island’s popular and hidden gems:
- Old town of Krk – You can wander around the town’s fortified walls and then visit the Frankopan castle built in the 12th century.
- Town of Vrbnik – A place where you can enjoy the local wines “žlahtina” and the bubbly “valomet”, but also try to squeeze through what is arguably the narrowest street in the world with a width of only 40 cm.
- Biserujka – This cave is a perfect option for either bad weather or scorching heat as the temperature underground is at constant 13°C.
- Island of Košljun – It can be visited by a boat-taxi. It is home to a monastery/museum and a handful of Franciscan monks who still live there.
- Moon Plateau – If you take the “Path to the Moon” from Baška, it will take you to an elevated plateau whose surface resembles that of the moon. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the island and the sea.
- Aquarium in Baška – Another place worth visiting, especially on a rainy day. You can see over 100 species of fish.
- Lovrečeva Fair – Held every year for the past 500 years from August 8 to 10 on the occasion of the feast of St. Lawrence. You can expect performances, concerts, workshops, but also the opportunity to buy original local souvenirs.
Events
Krk is a host of many events that take place during (almost) the whole year. Culinary events, music events, festivals, sports events – choose your favorite among them.
Where to swim
You can choose more popular beaches near larger towns:
- Vela Plaža (Baška)
- Lukobran Beach (near the town of Krk)
- Punta Debij Beach (near Punat)
- Pešja Beach (near Omišalj)
- Kijac Beach (near Njivice)
- Rupa Beach (near Malinska)
Or secluded beaches* away from the crowds:
- Oprna Bay (below the road to Stara Baška)
- Petrina Beach (near Polje, about 1 km walk from the road)
- Mala and Vela Luka (east from Baška)
- Spena Beach (near Brzac)
*keep in mind that not all of the beaches are accessible by car so you might have to do a bit of walking
Where to stay
On the island of Krk you will find numerous villas that will be an ideal starting point for exploring all the beauties of the island. What we would recommend is a villa in the interior. By choosing a villa in such a location, you will be close to all the essential amenities, yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle of coastal towns. On Krk you will find villas with a pool, villas in nature, intimate villas for up to 2 people, but also family villas with pool and playground for up to 12 people.
