When to visit Cape Kamenjak
Spring and autumn are ideal for quieter walks and cycling. If you want to swim, choose summer. In that case it is best to come early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when it is less crowded and not as hot. The park is open until 10 pm.
If you decide to visit by bike, Cape Kamenjak offers numerous trails. In Premantura you can visit the Kamenjak Nature House, an educational center dedicated to the flora and fauna of the peninsula. Half a day is enough if you want to visit one or two coves and take a short walk. If you want the full experience, including swimming, cycling, a visit to the Safari Bar and searching for dinosaur footprints, it is best to set aside a whole day.
Flora and fauna of Cape Kamenjak
Cape Kamenjak is located at the southernmost point of the Istrian peninsula, roughly ten kilometers south of Pula and about a twenty minute drive from Premantura. The peninsula is full of coves, small islands and hidden beaches.
The peninsula has been a protected area since 1996. More than 600 plant species grow in a relatively small area, and around thirty protected orchid species have been recorded in the wider Medulin area. The sea around the peninsula is clean, which is why noble pen shells have settled here, and occasionally a Mediterranean monk seal wanders into the area.
The dry Mediterranean climate favors lizards and snakes, which are common here throughout the year. The peninsula is also home to two potentially dangerous species: the horned viper and the black widow.
Beaches and coves of Cape Kamenjak
The underwater world is exceptionally rich, which makes Cape Kamenjak a favorite spot for divers. A stronger sea current on the southern side of the peninsula attracts windsurfers, but we advise swimmers to be careful.
Not interested in diving or surfing, but sunbathing with a good book sounds perfect? No problem. Cape Kamenjak has rocky beaches with flat rocks for sunbathing, pebble beaches for families, and sea caves and cliffs for the most adventurous. Also visit the well known Safari Bar, located at the very southern tip of the peninsula, above Mala Kolombarica cove. It is a great spot to rest, grab a drink and find a bit of shade after swimming and walking.
The dinosaur trail and the Porer lighthouse
Do not miss the walk along the marked trail leading to fossilized dinosaur footprints, roughly 100 million years old, visible at Cape Grakalovac. From the same part of the peninsula there is a view of the Porer lighthouse, built in 1846 on the small island of the same name.
Safety notes, currents, sun and park entry
- During the summer season, an entrance ticket is required to enter the park by motor vehicle. Entry is free for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Sea currents on the southern side of the peninsula are fairly strong. Conditions are ideal for windsurfing, but swimmers are advised to be cautious.
- There is not much shade on the peninsula, and even fewer shops, so bring enough water, sunscreen and fruit or snacks.
- Cape Kamenjak is home to many protected plant species, so it is important to stick to the marked trails and not carry off any plants or stones.
